DIAGNOSIS OF APD

At Sound idEARS, we adopt a test battery approach in our diagnosis of APD based upon the recommendations made by the Consensus Conference on the Diagnosis of APD in School-Aged Children (Journal of American Academy of Audiology, 2000). Our test battery consists of an evaluation of the following:

1.
Peripheral auditory system
2.
Binaural integration and separation
3.
Temporal patterning
4.
Auditory closure
5.
Auditory figure-ground discrimination
6.
Binaural interaction
7.
Language processing assessment

It is also highly recommended that each individual have a speech and language assessment by a Speech Language Pathologist and a psychoeducational assessment by an Educational Psychologist/Consultant.

The APD assessment will provide information:

1.
On whether an Auditory Processing or Language Processing Disorder exists or not,
2.
About the nature of the Processing Deficit
3.
That leads directly to the most effective intervention methods.

Each assessment also includes a comprehensive report which is sent to each family as well as to any other professionals involved in the care of the individual.

APD can exist either in isolation or concomitantly with other disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sensory Integration Disorder, Delayed Language, Reading and Writing Disabilities, Non-Verbal Learning Disability, Language-Based Learning Disability and Dyslexia.
